Home Sweet Home!

After 10 days on the road, Jim is back home again- well, check that. He's at least in Iowa, but he's already gone again to ref a football game tonight. I sure missed him. Gotta tell ya, hats off to my sister-in-law, Kim, who has done it with Nicholas being gone for 7 months or more at at time, WITH kiddos ---TWICE!!! --But even with the long hours and many days on the road, we're both extremely grateful, especially with the economy the way it is, that he has such a great job.

He was with his crews in the rugged mountains of Virgina putting up power lines. This is a new 500 KV transmission called the TRAIL project for Allegheny Power. These photos were taken about 15 miles southwest of Winchester, VA. This power line will run along side the other existing power line for 12 miles. But working in the mountains is tough. They go from 1,000 MSL (mean sea level for you non-pilots) to 2500 feet. Rough terrain, rocky, steep, etc.

Jim's crews are drilling holes for the bases of those huge lattice electrical towers. They also do the bases for a lot of those new wind-turbines you see now in Iowa.

Then they fill them with about 4-5 truck loads of concrete - about 38 yards worth, for those of you in construction. (I have to laugh now when I see these yellow vests. Jim told me they all call them their "HIT ME VESTS"! )

Then new huge towers like you see in the background will go in on top of the concrete base - those towers are about 90-100 feet tall. All this so we can do all we do with electricity!! Yea!

I knew Jim would need a pick-me-up when he got home, so I made my own little welcome home "banner" and taped signs on the trees along our lane, Burma Shave Style.

He laughed so hard he said his jaw hurt. Guess the pick-me-up worked! Enjoy the weekend everybody!!

Wow LOVED the banners along the trees! You are awesome. It HAS seemed like Jim has been gone a ton lately! I'm glad he's home (back in Iowa). And I've done the 7 month thing 3 times now (not that I'm counting or anything)! Tee hee. We can't wait to see you guys in October!!!!
