Well history apparently was looking to repeat itself…

Friday afternoon a fast moving snow storm hit Iowa and by the time Jim left from work (1.5 hrs away in Creston) it was snowing 2 inches an hour! We had reservations for dinner at 5 downtown and by 4 he was still an hour from home. He called to say he was at a dead stop on I-80. As he drove by an accident of 5 semis, either in the ditch or jackknifed and cars all over in the ditches, he listened to weather warnings saying do not drive unless it’s an emergency and figured when he got home we’d just better stay home. I agreed. I’m not one for being out in this stuff anymore.
So, after reading a page from a really wonderful Christmas gift “positive thoughts” calendar from Miss Victoria ( It read: “Look for gifts in everything, especially when you are facing what looks like a negative situation.”)

So already dressed for dinner, I decided to make dinner (no laughing from the peanut gallery that knows how much I LOVE to cook!) For an emergency “date night” at home if we get snowed in, I had bought a Bertolli manicotti dinner and threw that in the oven. I got out the very china I’d used on our first date, some wine glasses and made a salad and fresh fruit and yogurt salad…. And waited…
Then Jim called to say he’d be a little bit yet as now he had to help the ambulance that had picked up to accident victims at that crash on I-80 get unstuck. He’s always got his tow ropes in the Tahoe so off goes in the slippery snow to help out his fellow emergency responders. (sorry no pictures, Jim said he just wanted to get them and himself outta there!)

So when Jim FINALLY got home, he was surprised to find a romantic dinner awaiting him.

We settled down in front of the TV instead of a movie and I gave Jim one of his Valentine’s gifts- some new Iowa State lounging attire to commemorate our meeting on campus 20 years ago.
