Perseid Meteor Shower

If you've never seen a meteor shower, now's your chance! Don't miss out! It's really something to see!! Last night, or rather, early this morning, (3 AM) I got up and went outside to watch the light show. Thanks to my best friend, Miss Victoria, who reminded me it was going on, I was able to enjoy what we call falling stars at least once or twice a minute.

Here's a little info I found on National Geographic. "The Perseid meteors are bits of 2,000-year-old debris left behind by the periodic comet Swift-Tuttle. Earth's atmosphere collides with the debris at more than 38 kilometers (23 miles) a second (comet facts).
(Related:
"Comet Swarm Delivered Earth's Oceans?") The meteors generally get incinerated before they can strike the ground, creating the streaks of superheated, glowing air we call shooting stars. "

I remember one year when we first moved out here, in December I think, I took the Cody, Bashful and Cricket out with me and laid out in the hayfield on a big comforter to watch the meteor shower. Jim, reluctantly, joined me, but didn't' last but 15 minutes and opted for sleep over a romantic falling star moment. That's OK, the oggie-doggies and I lay there for an hour or so, me all bundled up in a coat, the dogs wondering just what the heck I was doing, but wagged there tails anyway.

As I lay there, under a really huge and star filled sky, I was amazed at how many there were streaking across the sky. It was so quiet and peaceful - being the only one out there, or at least I thought, watching one of nature's mysteries. And then my show started to come to an end as Mother nature started to draw her own curtain with a thin layer of clouds... they pressed in on all sides, leaving a shrinking hole directly above us. The inside of a donut, with a few meteors trying to creep into the ever smaller opening. I was sad to see it end. It was really quiet magical!
The show tonight is still predicted to be great... So, I highly encourage you to set your alarm for sometime tonight or early this morning (before 5 AM) to at least look out your window and search for a meteor... and then make a wish!! It could come true!!! :)

No meteor showers in our skies... just rain clouds (or should I say the last remaining remnants of Felicia) Poo.
