Thunderstorms are a common
occurrence during Iowa summers... and with that comes flashes of lightning, booming thunder and
occasional tornadoes. For Julie it means
sleepless nights. On one such night, 2:30 AM, so technically, morning, Julie was wide awake waiting for yet another storm to pass. She got up and decided to go read in the
living room. After 5 or 10 minutes she looked up from her book to see a bolt of lightning hit the ground in the hayfield.
Simultaneously, a window rattling clap of thunder jolted her from her chair. Seconds later, Jim hollers from bed, (he usually sleeps through EVERYTHING) "I heard THAT one!"
When Jim drove down the lane later that morning, he called from his cell phone to tell Julie that that the lightning strike hit one of their 80 newly planted trees lining the driveway. It melted the plastic plastic protecting the trunk and created a
crater around the trunk.

Before...

After.
